Stephen Lewis is stepping down as chair of Troutman Pepper Hamilton & Sanders effective at the start of 2024, following the election of managing partner Thomas Cole Jr. to the position. Washington, D.C., partner Amie Colby, meanwhile, will succeed Cole in the managing partner role.
Lewis served as legacy firm Troutman Sanders’ managing partner until the 2020 merger with Pepper Hamilton and as the first chair and CEO of the merged firm. Cole, the incoming chair, served as managing partner at Pepper Hamilton before the merger and continued in that role at the combined firm.
In addition to voting Colby into the managing partner role starting in January, partners at the firm selected multifamily housing finance practice chair Brian Iwashyna to become chair of the firm’s partner compensation committee starting Friday.
Ashley Taylor remains as the firm’s vice chair and co-chair of its state attorneys general practice.
According to the firm’s announcement, Lewis will remain as a partner in the firm. Having started with Troutman Sanders in 1991 as an associate, he became partner in 1999, specializing in corporate law.
Lewis was then elected as chair of Troutman Sanders in 2011 and, in addition to overseeing the merger between Troutman Sanders and Hamilton Pepper, he saw “the firm double in size and almost triple its revenue,” per the firm’s announcement.
In 2022, its second year as a combined firm, Troutman Sanders grew revenue by 5% to $1.08 billion and net income by 2.8% to $398.1 million.
But the firm did see substantial departures earlier this year in Philadelphia, with a substantial team leaving for Goodwin Procter. That group included one of the architects of the merger, former Pepper Hamilton chair Thomas Gallagher, who served as firmwide vice chair of Troutman Pepper until December 2022.
Joining Gallagher in the move to Goodwin were the chair of the 140-lawyer strong health sciences department, Rachael Bushey, and the chair of the health care transactions and regulatory practices of the health sciences department, John Jones.
