Number one New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewell will write the upcoming Marvel crime series thriller, Breaking the Dark: A Jessica Jones Marvel Crime Novel, an original story starring private detective Jessica Jones.
According to Marvel, Hyperion Avenue, an imprint of Disney Publishing Worldwide, will launch the brand-new Marvel Crime fiction series for adults in July, revealing an exciting first look at the Breaking the Dark: A Jessica Jones Marvel Crime Novel cover, the first book in the series. Marvel’s description of the novel reads, “Meet Jessica Jones: Retired superhero, private investigator, loner. She tried her best to be a shiny spandex crime fighter, but that life only led to unspeakable trauma. Now she avoids that world altogether and works on surviving day-to-day in Hell’s Kitchen, New York.”
“The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night’s poor choices. But something about Amber Randall’s story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK. The twins don’t act like themselves, and they now have flawless skin, have lost their distinctive tics and habits, and keep talking about a girl named Belle. Amber insists her children have been replaced by something horrible, something ‘perfect.'”
Jessica Jones travels to a small village, Barton Harlop, in the British countryside to meet the mysterious Belle, who lives with a strange female guardian. Jessica’s distrust of perfection motivates her to unravel the mystery behind the Randall twins’ changed personas. Breaking the Dark, the first book in the brand-new Marvel Crime series introduces fans to a grittier, street-level side of the Marvel Universe. Future books in the series will explore S.A. Cosby’s Luke Cage and Alex Segura’s Daredevil.

Lisa Jewell Discussed Breaking the Dark
Jewell discussed how she found the inspiration to write Jessica Jones, “I love Jessica Jones! Who doesn’t love Jessica Jones?! And not only is Jessica Jones my favorite Marvel character, she is also a private investigator, and I have never written about a private investigator before, so it felt like there was a lot to get my hooks into,” she said. “I first of all set about reading the full Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos Alias comic series and came to the first page of my novel fired up with pure Jessica energy,” Jewell revealed.
The author also discussed her creative process for Breaking the Dark, “I pictured these scenes like frames in a comic book: black, roiling, stormy sky, and Jessica with a hangover,” she said. “And then I pictured a well-dressed client coming to her office with a story about her teenage twins coming back from the UK acting like different people, and from there I followed the story where it took me. I always write like this, so things like “themes” and “topics” are never part of the original premise of a book; they are things that come out of the book, unplanned and unexpectedly as I write,” Jewell added.
Regarding what readers could expect from the book, Jewell stated, “Readers can expect a rollercoaster transatlantic adventure involving a colorful cast of rogues and villains, a power-crazed beauty influencer, some dark romance, a precocious teen detective, clairvoyants, dystopian tech, Jessica Jones at her most Jessica-y, and an immortal cat called Mr. Smith.”
Breaking the Dark: A Jessica Jones Marvel Crime Novel will be available from Hyperion Avenue on July 2, 2024.
